Western Road

A Memory of Mitcham.

My Grandfather, William Rondeau (Old Bill), owned a second-hand shop on Western Road, opposite Love Lane. Next door was Reggie Wiisbey's, the green-grocers, then came 2 little cottages and Maidments the corner shop. They had 2 sons, little Arthur and Roysie. I believe Cyril Maidment the speedway rider was their cousin. They sold the best ice cream you could get, Lyon's, and delicious sweets. On the opposite corner stood the Fountain Pub, and across the road was the Gypsy yard. I remember 2 girls who lived there; Rachel and Patience, they had the most beautiful hair - all waves and curls, one was blonde and the other a red head. There was a young man who lived their too, Joshua, he may have been their brother but I don't know. I loved living in Mitcham then it was such a nice place, all changed now sadly. This site has brought back so many memories, I enjoy reading every one's letters.

I was born off Lewis Road, so knew the area well. Cyril Maidment also had a brother Brian who raced to, although he quit the sport early, I used to go to Wimbledon every Monday evening to watch them. I attended Western Road school between 1959 and 1963....davecabot@hotmail.com
