Morfa Nefyn, one mile from Nefyn town, has a fine sandy beach. The headland at Porthdinllaen offered a natural anchorage, sheltered from the prevailing south-west winds. This was the only good harbour on the west coast of Lleyn. It is strange to think that this quiet place was once an important centre for shipping—it even tried to compete with Holyhead as the Irish mail-packet port. With barely enough wind to keep under way, small craft lie just offshore.

Howel (?) Davies was the post master when I was a child growing up in Morfa Nefyn. His daughter Rhian Wilson Davies was in the same class as me at Pwllheli Grammar School, later amalgamated with Frondeg School to become Ysgol Glan y Môr. She had a younger sister called Helen. The post office also sold newspapers and comics. I bought nany a Bunty or Judy comic there. I seem to ...see more
