Village School
A Memory of Mottingham.
I went to the village school, firstly the one in Dorset Road and then the primary school near West Park. On the corner was Martins Bank with a big gold grasshopper over the door. I used to try to get to the school playground early after an air-raid to see if I could find any shrapnel. The head master was a Mr. White and the other teacher was Mrs. Phippen. My best friend was Betty Peters who lived opposite the school near The Porcupine pub. My father had a shoe repair shop in the village, opposite the butchers. A Mr. Dillon had the butchers and the off-licence was on the corner of Devonshire Road. We got used to the bombs etc but a buzz-bomb came down, skidded all down the road and hit the petrol garage by the war memorial. It was chaos trying to put the fire out.
