It was here in the mid 1800s that Dr William Penny Brookes practised. He had the unusual idea that exercise was good for people and founded the annual Wenlock Olympic Games to encourage his patients to take up sport. This idea was later copied by Baron de Coubertin, who began the international Olympic movement.
