More about this scene
Isolated on an island amidst the marshes, the community grew lax and neglected their religious discipline; the monks developed a taste for worldly comforts. When the bishop of Bath and Wells visited in the early 14th century, he was not impressed with their conduct and commanded them to build the nearby parish church and provide it with a priest.
