Best Time Of My Life

A Memory of Muirkirk.

The best time of my life was as a young boy living in Muirkirk. My grandparents, James and Jean McKie who lived in Garronhill, were awesome. He was the local baker at the Co-op. I can still remember him standing in the bakery as I ate my free cake. My parents were Jim and Jean Smith and we live in Stoneyhill Avenue. We moved to Motherwell in 1969. I eventually moved to Australia in 1981. The Boys Brigade, school days and church are all fond memories. Some people I still think about are; John Johnston, Jimmy Girdwood, Mary Wallace and Susan Park.

I was born there in 1959 and moved away when I joined the army in 1975. I had a great childhood there and try to go back as often as I can.
Sometimes it saddens me to see so many empty shops, and very little employment seems to be forcing the younger generation to move away to where they can find work.
Muirkirk hasn't lost its spirit and when I walk around I have memories on every street corner.
Jim Smith my first primary school crush ( Muirkirk Furnace Road School).
Brother and sisters were: Jean, Janice, Agnes and Cameron.
I moved back to Muirkirk in 1993. I bought the cottage which belonged to your grandparents at one time. The bakehouse where your grandfather worked was right next to the house.
The Regal picture house was behind the cottage
Very Happy Days Jim and many many happy memories.
Mary Wallace
George! Are you George Sharpe formerly Meanlour Drive Muirkirk?
