Netley, The Royal Victoria Hospital c.1955

More about this scene
This must be one of the last photographs of the old military hospital at Netley before most of it disappeared from the shores of Southampton Water in a huge heap of rubble. It was Queen Victoria who originally argued the need for such a hospital; its objective was to care for the gravely-afflicted casualties of war. The building attracted criti- cism, and a mix-up with the plans resulted in the hospital being built the wrong way round, so that all the wards faced the sunless north.
