Like Andrew, I was also living in New Haw around the same time. We came to 144 Woodham Lane, about 1964 and I attended New Haw County Primary school from my 4th to 10 th year. My Dad was from Ireland, Mortimer, he had a business called Woodham Groundworks, he used to have to time it right in the morning, otherwise he could not get on to the road to go to work as the traffic was so heavy. I was born in the house number 9 Hart Road . I remember attending Manor county First school and walking g there on my own. Who'd do that now as a 5 yr old ? Brother and sisters all went to St Mary's and I remember seeing them on The playing fields through the fence at the bottom of our garden . Our neighbours Were the Wellhams just up the road . I wanted to add my own memories of growing up in New Haw from 1965 until moving again in 1973.
The family moved from Richmond (then in Middlesex) to 187 New Haw Road, a detached 3-bedroom house with 1/3 acre of overgrown orchard and backing onto Bentley's Farm. I lived in Broomfield Road from l947 until I got married in l976 in this church. I also remember going to West Byfleet primary school and being in Mrs Crabbe's class with Miss Hey as headmistress. When in my early teens, I worked on Bentley's farm in the evenings with Marilyn Bailey.
My birth certificate states I was born 1940 in Byfleet in an Emergency Hospital. Does anyone know where that would have been. Have no idea why I was there except my mother (a Canadian) was returning home to Canada but was unable to do so because of the war. Perhaps she was stranded here or perhaps her husband had family in the area. Any help appreciated tracking down the exact place where this hospital would have been. Many thanks.
We originally moved in 1957 when I was 5 from Thornton Heath in Surrey to Burleigh Road in Addlestone because my dad had started working for Peto Scott (TV makers) near Weybridge. Then in December 1957 my parents bought a lovely house with 1/3 acre garden in New Haw Road, number 143. We were a family of 4. I was moved to New Haw in1941 as a small boy, after my mother and I had been sent to several other locations during the early part of the Second World War, my father working in munitions. We lived in Holly Avenue, and after New Haw primary school, I was transferred to Bentlands primary school in Addleston, where all the pupils were like myself London evacuees. Does anyone remember Rosalind (Ros) Newton who went to Fullbrook School in the 1960s?
I lived at 5 Manor Drive with my 3 sisters, Kathleen, Elizabeth and Mary. I was born in the house at 1am on a snowy night in 1954 and was delivered by my dad and Dr Poles, while Mary slept and Kathleen and Elizabeth were shipped across the road to spend the night with Stuart Yates.
