Growing Up

A Memory of New Malden.

I was 9 in 1959 when we moved to New Malden. Hence I spent almost my entire childhood and all my teenage years there and I know it well. My father was caretaker of the Methodist church on the corner of the High Street and Cambridge Road - opposite Tudor Williams. I went to school in New Malden, worked in New Malden, married there, and later, my son went to school there as well. Looking at the old photos on this website brings back many fond memories. After my parents died, all photos we ever had were lost, so it was wonderful to see these. I moved to Australia in 1983 and now understand that in those last 26 years New Malden has changed beyond belief. Perhaps memories are best kept as memories, but it is nice to reminisce sometimes. Does anybody remember the Guppy family from Cambridge Rd?

I lived in Coombe Gardens in New Malden from 1947 to 1967, when I married and moved away. I have wonderful memories growing up in New Malden. We went to beverley park every sunday in the cricket season with our parents, usually ending up in the gardens of the Fountain Pub for crisps and coke! We played in and around Beverley Brook ,off of Blakes Lane and had a swing made of rope and an old tyre, not sure who was responsible for erecting that, but it was great fun! I went to Burlington Road school for all of my school years, leaving at the age of 15 and then going to work in a factory at Shannon's Corner called Shannons Systems. I also worked at Venners, briefly, also Carters seeds and Bradbury Wilkinsons and finally at Gala Cosmetics. I moved back to Motspur park for a while with my two sons who went to school in Raynes Park. and I now live in Bournemouth. Apparently I would not recognise New Malden Now. Does anyone remember The Grange in Blakes Lane? A big old house that was derilect and as kids were told it was haunted, probably designed to keep us away! Also the Washington Bar , near Cannings in New Malden High Street? My pal and I used to go shopping in the village, as we called it then, every Saturday and went to the washington for double egg and chips, Yummy. Aaaaah those were the days.
My wife Chris Snelling (as she was then) lived in New Malden until 1971 My band played at The Woodstock pub, twice. We now live in Aylsham Norfolk.

Allan Groombridge.
