More about this scene

All survives in Bridge Street, which leads out of the south- east side of the Market Place in the distance. These are Georgian and early 19th- century buildings; the lower pedimented building, Morris's (right), is a two-storey early 19th-century building, despite a 1950s attempt to give it a modern screen. The shop blinds have gone since the 1950s. The taller building at the right-hand corner, early 18th-century, is now G H Porter, 'Provisions', but in 1806-07 this was where Lord Byron's first volumes of poetry were published.

My Great Great Grandfathers Shop Is In This Photo!
Having been doing a lot of research on my Great great Grandfather Joseph Cutts Carter, I have managed to locate where his Glass and China shops were during his life. He actually unexpectedly passed away in 1906 at the age of 63, I know this from a very detailed article about his life which was in the Newark Herald April1906. Saracens Head Newark.
This hotel is mentioned in The Heart of Mid-Lothian by Sir Walter Scott written in 1817. Jeanie Deans is walking from Edinburgh to London and at Ferrybridge is advised to stay next at The Saracens Head Newark. Paddling Pool
My first memory is when I was a toddler playing in the paddling pool with all the moms sitting chattering on the benches. When I was about seven (about 1972) I was allowed in the big pool but I could only just stand in the shallow end with my nose and chin sticking out of the water. Farndon Ferry
the ferry was run by Charles Edward Saxby until his death in 1959. It was then taken over by Sidney Clarke until approx. 1968. In the floods of 1963/4 we couldn't cross the river and had to row across the fields to Rolleston to collect food. When the floods receeded we used to collect the fish in buckets from the hollows in the field behind the ferry house and throw them back in the river I always understood that it was classed as a Queen's ferry (one of only two) and could not be closed.

On receipt of your enquiry our archivist will check the scan and advise you if the quality is good enough.

What is an Album?

An album is a way to save a selection of Frith photos, maps and memories that are of interest to you.

Creating an Album enables you to make short lists and then make a final selection from the album. In particular it makes ordering things like calendars much easier - simply create an Album of the 12 photos you like and then use the Album when placng your order - our order process will give you this option.

You can create as many Albums as you want, so perhaps make one for your hometown, where you live now, where your parents live now etc.
