The oldest picture we have that is taken from this angle is dated 1890; the only difference is that in those days the gatehouse was ivy-free. The gatehouse, 45?ft by 30?ft with walls nine feet thick, was designed and built by Ranulph of Durham, and is one of the earliest examples of a gatehouse fulfilling the role of a keep.
