More about this scene
St Mary's is well known for the large number of chantries endowed by Newark's wealthier inhabitants. Many wealthy merchants, such as Thomas Meering, made sure that there was provision in their wills to enable a priest to say a Mass every day for the good of their souls. For its size, St Mary's had more chantries than most parish churches, an indication of just how prosperous the town was between the 13th and 16th centuries.
