More about this scene
The Palladian-style Town Hall designed by John Carr dominates the background. Carr was one of the great architects of the late 18th century; his work includes the most important buildings in the former spa resort of Buxton, Derbyshire. Both the Crescent (built 1780-84) and the Great Stables (built 1789) were designed by Carr for the fifth Duke of Devonshire; the Great Stables are somewhat better known in their present guise as the Royal Devonshire Hospital.
