More about this scene
The 252 ft spire of St Mary Magdalen towers over the Market Place. Much of the rebuilding of St Mary's was instigated by Henry de Newark, whose career in the Church saw him rise from Rector of Barnby to Prebendary of St Paul's and later of Southwell; he was appointed Archbishop of York in 1296. De Newark was more political animal than cleric, a fact not lost on Edward I, who appointed him as his chaplain. Longshanks trusted de Newark enough to send him on diplomatic missions to the Low Countries, and as well to Rome to discuss matters relating to the crusades.
