Newark On Trent, The Infirmary 1909

More about this scene
This photograph was taken in the days when only the fit went to hospital; you needed to be for matron's rounds. Patients lay in their bed, not on it, legs together, arms out of the blankets pressed firmly to the side of the body. Those allowed to sit upright did so, but with their arms folded. Patients were not allowed to ask questions, and were to speak only if requested to do so.
