More about this scene
Newark's position on the Great North Road and the River Trent attracted industry including flour milling, maltings, brewing, an iron works, leather working, and even a glue factory. Between 1801 and 1901 the population rocketed from 6000 to 15,000, but even so it had long lost the fight against its great commercial rival Nottingham.
