Grandmother

A Memory of Newbottle.

My grandmother worked in a hostelry called the Jolly Potter; it was run by Joseph Price and his wife Elizabeth. My grandmother was Julia Rutter, she was 16 and a servant, this was in the 1890's. Does any know of the Price family, the pub or the Rutter family?

hi, the jolly potter was a well used public house until the last few years where it suffered serious decline mainly due to the closing of coal mines and the fall of heavy industries in the area, (thanks to maggie thatcher) it was recently bought by a chinese family where it has been turned into a restaurant and takeaway, which is making a good start up to now, i am not aware of any price family, but a mrs rutter did run a shop in grasswell which is the next pit village down the lane approx, half a mile this shop closed around 1950-55 and i believe, while writing this i remember the next shop along in grasswell was run by a price who retired from there and sold the shop as recent as 2005 they moved on to washington new town, i hope this helps, regards, R.LEADBITTER.
