Newland Bottom Cobblers

A Memory of Newland Bottom.

Stan Laurel's grandfather ran a shoemending business in Newland Bottom. I'd ;like to know what happened to that premises and when. Is it still standing? What is it used for and what is the address please!

Hi, I live in Newland Bottom.....how do you know his grandfather ran a cobblers business here? I have researched a great deal on the hamlet, but it is the first I have heard. It would be interesting to know more...,best wishes Bob
George Metcalfe's bootshop was a well-known business at the turn of the century and Stan often referred to it in interviews. I was hoping someone would know what happened to the business. George and Sarah lived at 3 Foundry Cottages in Ulverston. In her book Laurel Before Hardy Jenny Owen-Pawson refers to "records" regarding the shop which may still be held by the council. The museum was started by Bill Cubin, twice Mayor of Ulverston and the Mayor who greeted the Queen on her visit. Bill knew the family intimately and became something of a living encyclopedia.
