More about this scene
On 18 January 1908 this scene was far less tranquil - a full scale riot was in progress between Conservative and Liberal supporters after the former won the parliamentary seat by just 559 votes. There was one death, the Conservative Club was stoned, and the visiting Emily Pankhurst had to take refuge in Banbury's County Stores (in the background, behind the horse).
