Childhood On Castleford Road

A Memory of Normanton.

I remember the fields and Beckbridge prefabs. I and my sister attended the infants school , set back from Castleford road sadly no more except the walls remain .Swam in the old Baths where asda, s store now stands.I played in the fields where Beckbridge green estate is now built upon .Walked many times down to the beck and scramble up to the top of the disused railway embackment the old bridge still stands though in disrepair due to vandalism and trees and scrubs now clutter the walkway that was once the tracks leading to the pit . Fond memories now so distant from the parodox of distribution warehouses and by-passes and the M.62 which I watched been construted on my return vactions from WestGermany .The terrace houses where now stands the Jet Fuel Station . The terraces that were demolished and the village pub built upon , only later to fall to the same demise to the new housing constructed there now .The industrial site of beckbridge , now a sorry site where we played in the fields as children .collecting lupins from the derelict prefabs gardens that were full of rubarb and other beautiful plants. These are my memories
A happy time where you could leave your doors open without fear of intruders and children played without fear of abduction , how times have changed and not for the best. Society does not respect the area any more , they litter with intent and damage what isnt theres .
