This rose garden was the site of Hawhill Park's first bowling green. Behind the roses are the ornamental gates and the spring and summer gardens opened in April 1959 by Ernest Jones, president of the National Union of Mine Workers, to commemorate a centenary of the Yorkshire Branch.
