Many Holidays In North Somercotes

A Memory of North Somercotes.

We used to visit my Gran and Grandad, Florence Daisy and George Humberstone every summer. They lived at The Bungalow, Front Street (Main Street?) This was on the same side and just past the bus depot heading towards The Axe & Cleaver and opposite what is now the Somercotes Academy. My Mum, Ida Millicent had 2 sisters Hilda and Sylvia. Mum married and moved to Sussex and every holiday was spent in North Somercotes visiting my grandparents. I remember spending many evenings sitting outside the Bay Horse Inn with a lemonade and a packet of crisps whilst my parents enjoyed a drink inside. I also remember a small shop somewhere opposite the Axe and Cleaver, ran by a Mary Stainton, not sure exactly what type of shop it was but it did sell holiday souvenirs. Lots of trips to Donna Nook to enjoy the beach and to pick samphire which my Gran then pickled. Last time we were in the area the village was almost unrecognisable. Many happy holidays spent there.

Hello Maggie, I looked on this site today just by chance & read your memory. I remember Aunt Florrie ever so well, and I think we must be very distant cousins - George was my Granny's brother. Would you like to make contact so we could maybe compare notes on family history? Best regards, Monica
Hi Monica. Well I never! Didn't know this site existed until yesterday. We were talking about N Somercotes and looked on Google and found it.. I don't know much about the family other than Gran and Grandad and of course Mums sisters (my Aunties) and resulting cousins. Sadly all the cousins have passed away now. In fact we are attending my last cousins funeral in Tetney on Monday which is how we came to be reminiscing about North Somercotes. It would have been nice if we were to have enough time to drive around the area whilst we are up there, but we are bringing our caravan up to the Peak District on Sunday and will drive across for the funeral on Monday. I will have to go through the old family photos and see what I can find. I don't know if you would be happy for me to contact you by e-mail direct rather than using this site. My e-mail address is maggie.ledger3@btinternet.com
