School House Tiworth.

A Memory of North Tidworth.

My dad Arthur Rutherford was the headmaster in the late 1960's until 1972 when we moved to Poole in Dorset. I recall my time at the school with my dad as headmaster and my mum for some time as my teacher. I didn't enjoy that! I did enjoy living in Tidworth for the 7 years we lived their. Playing on the downs with my friends David Yelf his dad was the village police officer and David Powell his dad was a officer and he used to scare me as a young child. His military disapline used to over ore me. Looking back I had a good childhood in tidworth. Sadly my dad died 01/02/2013. He was 86 years old.

I remember your father, I was a greenjacket stationed in Lucknow barracks and we volunteered to move some heavy furniture at the school.Your Mum & dad kindly supplied tea and scones they were a lovely couple,we were without exception truly impressed at the way we were welcomed and looked after by two wonderful people. So sad to learn of his passing God must have opened a new school and only wanted the best.❤
I lived in Zouch Avenue, other end of this bit of Tidworth. There was a florist, run by a Mrs. Tackley. She sold dog biscuits loose in tins. We had a "lassie dog". Always had a greyish colour cat with kittens. A waiting list for them as well. I thought of her as an old lady but I suppose that was being about seven years of age. I know where she lived and that was a hell of a walk if she was elderly. She kept in touch with so many GIs who sent flowers to people from her shop. I believe she was buried in the village cemetery in Tidworth. My father was a barrack officer when he left the Rifle Brigade after 21 years (now back to being called The RiflesI am glad to say). When he died we came to South London to live and my childhood, which was idyllic, ended there. Army education was wonderful for us kids. Station Road did have its own bank, the manager, exArmy, lived opposite us and if memory is correct drove a Morgan!! Wonder if this branch has gone in the last round of cuts. Thank you Tidworth for a lovely childhood.
Anyone vaguely remember me?

When I attended "North and South Tidworth School" from 1940-1946b Mr Heath was Headmaster.
I recall Mrs Tackley's florist shop where much later a school friend of mine, Hilary Lister worked and arranged to send flowers to my mother on her 90th birthday.
That’s nice to hear that while you were serving in the army you helped my parents. Sadly my mum has now passed away in December 2021.
They were a lovely couple and always taught us as children to treat others as we wanted to be treated.
