I remember Coombes shop well. I went to Headlands school with a girl who I think was part of that family, and I think she died of cancer while I was about 10 years old - around 1960. Her death shook me enormously. I now live in the US, near New York, but my brother still lives in Pitsford.

Hello I just read your article, and I couldn't believe it! I was transformed back over 50 yrs! If you attended St Marys on the Mounts then it would have been the infant school, also where I attended, I often remember going to coombes on the way home, I was maybe 7 or 8yrs do you remember the tray of jaw breaking toffee that would be served in a small triangle paper bag? I remember the little old lady she was small and wore her hair in a bun, she was always smiley with red cheeks.......but getting back to St Marys do you remember the nuns, they could be quiet cruel to the boys, and the huge juicy pears , that were sold to us for a penny or less,Jim you have made me recall so many memories locked deep in my head,Ive been living in London over 40 yrs, but I still have connections with Northampton, but now its just a shadow of how it was, very sad, just as well memories stay with us forever.......best wishes Ron

I was born in Northampton in 1946. My parents lived in Bailiff St. My first school was St Mary's. My memories of the school were not good,the nuns who ran it were cruel people. I can remember boys crying and shivering with fright.
My wife and I left Northampton in 1977 and now live in Weston Super Mare. We both still have family there,i have three brothers and my mother who is now in her 90s.The wife has her sister. We do still visit and although it has changed a lot,i can still find my way round quite easily.
