More about this scene

Apparently the horse remained a feature for some years, until building on this land swept it away. The Old Barn is opposite the row of terraced cottages. To the left is Kilburn Yard. From 1818-78 this was the prison, large enough to accommodate 96 prisoners, but it was little used; later it became stables. Now it has been adapted by Oakham School as the Art and Design Centre.

A Selection of Memories from Oakham

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our website to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was, prompted by the photographs in our archive. Here are some from Oakham

Sparked a Memory for you?

If this has sparked a memory, why not share it here?

I went to Oakham in 1952'first to Junior House (now Chapmans) under Geoff Liebert and then from 1955 to 1959 in School House under John Moore. We lived in Wilmslow and I travelled to and from by train from Manchester. They were happy days and seeing all the photos of Oakham brought back many happy memories of the time I spent at Oakham. Richard Higgs Brisbane Australia.
Not 100% sure if it was 1966 or 67, but I do remember that the castle roof was covered with a tarp for quite some time after lightening hit the castle during a storm.
I remember the Queen's visit to Rutland in this year. I remember all the children from the local schools forming the shape of a horseshoe in a field/park? and the Queen being driven around the horseshoe waving to us all.
