Originally, the fire station was at the southern end of Mill Street, next to the Salvation Army Hall. By 1955 a new station had been built on the corner of Brooke Road and South Street. In recent years this has been considerably modernised. In fact, the newer stations were only round the corner from the original site.

I went to Oakham in 1952'first to Junior House (now Chapmans) under Geoff Liebert and then from 1955 to 1959 in School House under John Moore.We lived in Wilmslow and I travelled to and from by train from Manchester. They were happy days and seeing all the photos of Oakham brought back many happy memories of the time I spent at Oakham. Richard Higgs Brisbane Australia.
Not 100% sure if it was 1966 or 67, but I do remember that the castle roof was covered with a tarp for quite some time after lightening hit the castle during a storm.
I remember the Queen's visit to Rutland in this year. I remember all the children from the local schools forming the shape of a horseshoe in a field/park? and the Queen being driven around the horseshoe waving to us all.
