More Memories Of Oakhanger…

A Memory of Oakhanger.

The Village Flower Show - we all contributed our entries to the village flower show in the hope of a First, Second or Third Place win - even a highly commended. The marquee was closed off for judging and during this time we enjoyed the stalls at the Flower Show. The Spinning Jinny was run by Edie Coles, Christine Cozens looked after the Raffle Tickets. There was also a Lucky Dip stall, Jumble table, a Coconut Shy. The highlight one year were the Swing Boats which all the children thoroughly enjoyed. They were sited near to where the swings are now situated. We could also pop into the Village Hall to purchase tea, coffee, orange juice, cakes and biscuits. My mum once had her Victoria Sandwich disqualified despite following the recipe from the cook book. After that, Mum sadly never entered the Flower Show again. Yet her cakes were a highlight of our family. Mum made truly wonderful cakes and pastries - Coffee and Walnut Cake, Chocolate Cake, Victoria Sandwich, Fairy Cakes, Treacle Tart ( topped with crushed Cornflakes). Mum even ventured into Chocolate Eclairs - just the once!
