More about this scene
The A29 that runs in a straight line through the village follows the course of the Roman Stane Street. The name Ockley comes from 'Occa's lea` - a Saxon who made a clearing in the wood here. Four pubs are situated in Ockley, and the well and pump (foreground right) were installed in 1837 following a bequest from a wealthy governess.
