Relations of mine lived in the row of cottages that backed onto the railway just past Old Burghclere Station. I only knew them as Marge and Fred, I was told by my family that Fred's job was the Beacon Lighter on Beacon Hill. I remember being there in the late fifties and running to the end of the garden to watch the steam trains go by. My Grandmother also lived in the area before marrying and going to live in Southampton where my Father was brought up. Her name was Lilian Digweed. I would love to hear from anyone who could shed some further light on my family. My father always told me the end cottage was the best and was the signalman's.
