Saturday Cinema

A Memory of Oldham.

I was born in 1950 at my grandparents house on Quebec Street, in the Werneth/Westwood area. I lived in Limeside at 86, Pine Tree Road and attended Limehurst junior school and then went on to Hollins Secondary school. Saturday always saw me going off to the Roxy cinema in Hollinwood, for the afternoon matinee with my friends. At one time we had the Mayor (and his wife) of Oldham living next door to us at number 88, Mr and Mrs Bradley. Us kids used to line the path for him when his car arrived to take him to functions.
Moved on to live in Glossop in 1965 and then joined the RAF in ‘67, never to return to my old Oldham haunts.
I had two younger sisters Alison and Gwen and an older brother George. He used to tell me of his escapades going out to Billingtons dance hall on a Saturday night doing the famous (in Oldham) Billingtons Barn Dance.
I attended the youth club at the Methodist church at the end of our road and also joined the Boys Brigade, also held in the church. Took part in many events at the church but eventually ‘left the flock’ on joining the RAF.
Lost contact with all my childhood friends from Oldham although I did try to re-connect later on and even went to a school reunion with little success of meeting old classmates, but being the pre-internet era, it was a difficult thing to do.
If anyone recognises me from this post I would like to hear from them to see how life went on.
