More about this scene
Here we see a rustic shelter and the Osmington Mills Hotel (left), with holiday chalets facing seawards. Increasingly wooded these days, the valley also hides the old coastguard cottages and the replacement coastguard cottages. John Jefferson was the Victorian chief officer of the coastguard station. In Edwardian times, Henry Baldwin established the Chalet refreshment rooms seawards of the thatched Picnic Inn, which was run by Frederick Miller.
