More about this scene
A little further upstream we come to the village of Otterton, built around one long main street. A bridge has spanned the Otter here since medieval times, though the structure we see here dates from 1827. Dominating the village is the church of St Michael, restored in 1869 by the local benefactress Lady Rolle. A priory was located here until the Reformation, when the village was purchased by Richard Duke, who converted some of the monastic buildings into a home.
