The Good Old Days!

A Memory of Oughtrington.

I often think back to my days at Lymm Grammar, from 1961-65, and although I did not particularly enjoy my school-days, the system worked a lot better than it does today! But what a school, and in what grounds! I notice that the catchment area has decreased since those days - I always thought it odd that pupils came from as far afield as Altrincham and Warrington! And yes, I remember Mr Harris & Mr. Frazer-Dackers - both rugby mad! Mr.Fairs I remember, as he was the chap who arranged the annual meeting with "Captains of Industry" when we were about to leave school - I think he also taught me Latin - some of which I remember to this day. I especially remember Miss Whitby, later Mrs Kirkham, our Geography teacher for 2 years - I must have done something right, as I had a very good report when I started work in Manchester - her father was the Marine Superintendant at Manchester Liners. I was also at Lymm Grammar at the time they built the roof on the pool - what an advantage that was, but I still remember the days before the roof went up....brrr! Although I have recently retired as a Captain in the Merchant Navy, these memories never disappear.
