Overton is the home of the famous paper mill that supplies paper for Bank of England notes. The founder of the mill, Henry Portal, came from France, escaping to England during the persecution of the Huguenots. Through his patron's uncle, the Governor of the Bank of England, he eventually won the contract to produce the paper.

I was born on 29th November 1928, and lived in Southsea in 1939, and during August my parents, little sister, and I went for a short holiday by coach to stay with an Aunt and Uncle at Overton in Hampshire. I remember when I was seven years old Overton had a special carnival. I would love to see any old photos of this event. I was lucky enough to be one of the special attendants. We received ribbon for saches and extra clothing allowance coupons for the dresses. I remember sitting on a vehicle in Winchester street and meeting some famous star whose name might have been ?
