More about this scene
Although it is sheltered and here looks relatively tranquil, the estuary has claimed many ships. The famous Doom Bar (so famous it even has a beer named after it!) extends from the west shore for nearly half a mile; in a big swell and falling tide it becomes a vicious mass of white water.
