Horrors Behind St Claire’s Convent

A Memory of Pantasaph.

My elderly mother recently passed away. On a return journey from Wales my partner and I called to the convent for a look around. As a child my mother was a resident of the orphanage between the ages of 5 and 16 between the 1930s and 1940s due to her parents dying. During my mother’s life she mentioned snippets about the convent including that she was given bread and dripping for breakfast and on arrival, all of her hair was cut off. The nuns also made her and other orphans stand at the bottom of their beds and hold their underwear up to see whether they were soiled. If they had wet the bed, they were punished. My mother was given no education and could only ever spell her name when she left the convent. I believe she was neglected of physical contact and was not allowed to speak to other orphans. As an adult, she rarely spoke about her experience at the convent, I expect this is a result of the traumatic time she spent there. I was horrified to recently read other comments of similar mistreatment stories - as her only son, I found these discoveries to be very disturbing.

My mother was an orphan sent here in 1939, and the stories she use to tell about the place were horrible, the nuns were cruel, vindictive ,and showed no compassion all in the name of god ,they used to have to wait on the boarders, clean the school on their hands and knees .My mother once ran away ,but got caught at the train station, the consequences were not good, it did have a lasting effect on her

I recently bought a large framed antique photograph of the girls and nuns at St Clare’s Convent, Pantasaph, dated 1921, because I liked the solid wood frame and the aged patina of the antique photograph.
I no longer have the space for it and rather than sell it on randomly, if this image would be of interest to you or someone you know please let me know. These girls’ are obviously somebody’s grandmother, mother, aunt etc and i imagine it might be of huge sentimental value to someone. I paid £40 but honestly I would be delighted to see it in the hands of someone who has an emotional connection with one of the subjects of the photograph. Please let me know if you’d like to see it? This is a genuine email, not a crazy spam, I’m a mother of two from Twickenham having a bit of a clear out and want to do something nice for someone!
Thanks & kind regards

My grandmother was orphaned at the age of 10 in 1910 and was eventually sent to St Claire's orphanage. She used to regale us with tales of trying to run away from the awful nun's. Once she escaped and tried to catch a donkey in the field. She ran around and round the field chasing it and finally fell asleep exhausted, only to be returned to the orphanage and punished. I remember one story of her looking under the nun's bed curtain to see what she wore under her habit, I think that earned her a night on the fire escape. The nun's were very strict and not very child friendly. There was one story of when she refused to apologise for something (it may have been running way or some other misdemeanor). She was locked in the room that contained empty coffins (I suppose kept in readiness for those who died). Every day a nun would visit and ask if she was going to apologise, each day she would say 'no'. She was left there for one or two weeks and became very ill. A doctor was called and insisted that she be allowed out and cared for.
She told us that she used to get up very early to clean fireplaces and wait on the borders. She was also educated with them in the same classrooms.
They are now selling replica properties at 400k some are called St Claire’s i am stunned, I have no words
I put comments on here last time and now they have gone. I did get a reply via email from a lady who had been in the orphanage .. we were there for a 6 week period twice and it was horrific and left lasting memories.we felt so sorry for the children who had nobody.
My sister sandra lost all her hair and my sister monica 5yrs of age got caned every day, the cane was dipped in salt and vinegar, left to scream in the corridor. Poor little mites who dared wet the bed were put into the attic rooms. Elizabeth, yes I have been back and they have luxurious apartments there, I will go again soon have another look.
I got out of the car and burst into tears. A very sad place.
