St Clare's Orphange Pantasaph 1931 To 1945 Margaret Connolly

A Memory of Pantasaph.

My late mother, Margaret Connolly lived there from birth until 1945. I know from some snippets from her that she had not enjoyed a happy childhood but it's not until reading comments on this website quite how bad it must have been. My thoughts and best wishes go out to everyone who had the misfortune of being there.
The sadistic nuns may have stolen my Mum's childhood and deprived her of an education, but they did not manage to take away her dignity, morality or sense of humour.
I'm trying to get in touch with anyone who may remember her. Please !

I was a boarder at Pantasaph between about 1944 and 47. Not sure of exact dates as I was very young . I can remember we were not allowed to mix with the 'orphans' who lived in another part of the school .I also remember seeing children my age 4/6 on their hands and knees scrubbing and polishing those long tiled corridors. Most of the nuns were very harsh,I remember children in my dorm being humiliated if they wet the bed.We sometimes had bread and gravy for a meal and on Sunday our one egg of the week ( but it was the tail end of the war) We often had bread and milk for supper which I could not cope with as it always made me sick, but I was always forced to remain in the dining room till I had eaten it....sometimes long after all the others had gone to bed. I have a group photo taken there which I will locate and endeavor to post!y
