Nostalgic memories of Patricroft's local history

Share your own memories of Patricroft and read what others have said

For many years now, we've been inviting visitors to our web site to add their own memories to share their experiences of life as it was when the photographs in our archive were taken. From brief one-liners explaining a little bit more about the image depicted, to great, in-depth accounts of a childhood when things were rather different than today (and everything inbetween!). We've had many contributors recognising themselves or loved ones in our photographs.

Why not add your memory today and become part of our Memories Community to help others in the future delve back into their past.

The memories I have of Patricroft were of going to Patricroft bridge to watch the Whit Week walks, my mum used to dress us all up in our best clothes [all eight of us], we only lived on Rowsley Road so it was just a short walk away. My sister was Rose Queen for St Catherine's church and after the processions all the floats went on Goddies Park where they had morris dancers and all sorts going on. I remember one year Minnie Cauldwell from Coronation Street opened it. They were really happy days.
I was born at 96 Station Road, Patricroft in 1934, and went to Lewis Street School. My best mates were Walter Mason and Derrick Pullar. I joined the Merchant Navy at 17 and sailed the world. I met a girl on board ship while on a voyage to New Zealand. Married for 54 years. I now live in Tunbridge Wells, Kent. The scene has changed, but not for the better. The scene shows where I think Tunnicliffes paper shop was, ...see more

Early memory of my Father-in-law Maurice Garvey was of Monica Sullivan. He missed getting in contact with her when she was back in the UK 6 or so years ago. He is currently in Australia and would love to contact her. If you can help contact me on copycatsmossman@bigpond.com
I was there from November 1947 to July 1954
I've been wondering why I could not find my grandfather (William Balshaw) on the 1901 census when he was 15 years old, I've now discovered he joined the Navy - he was on the Caledonia at the time of the Census. I have a photo of him and would be grateful if anyone who has Balshaw ancestors would click on this link and see if they recognise him, perhaps from old family albums. I'm still trying to find out where he disappeared to circa 1929. http://s879.photobucket.com/home/junebart
I have memories of living near Broughton Lane, I cannot remember the name of the street but we lived at number 4 and my Gran lived at 24. There was a factory called the Unicream over the road on Broughton Lane, it produced plums among other things, I remember stealing one or two as they rolled down a conveyor belt, or was it a dream? On the left on Broughton Lane there were air raid shelters.
I believe my great grandparents lived at 346 Liverpool Road. Looking for any neighbours at that time, hope you can help?? Many thanks June Bartlett
I recently saw a letter from one of my mother's distant cousins. It was written by a young woman in 1882 and the address said "British School, Patricroft" - and she signed it MaryAnn Balshaw. My paternal great grand parents are from Liverpool Road (I think in Barton? is this the same place) and I'm very keen to hear if anyone knows of Maryann's family? Would love to find out more. A person who read my previous account of my life in Patricroft asked me to elaborate on my story. Most of the important aspects of my early years were covered, but there are a few remaining stories that may interest the old timers who lived in Patricroft during 1941-1960 when I lived there. I now live on Long Island, New York. The headmaster during the time I was at Patricroft CE School was Mr. ...see more
