Convalescence 1960’s Style
A Memory of Pease Pottage.
My Grandmother was sent to Woodhurst Hospital, Peas Pottage, to convalesce following suffering from Bronchial Pneumonia. At the time we were living in Stockwell, South London, and for a small child it seemed to be a long way from London and in very different surroundings than our city centre flat! Far more imposing and very peaceful, just what you’d hope for when recovering from a serious illness, I suppose! Visiting hours were very restricted, especially for a small child and I believe I was allowed to visit on a Sunday afternoon and for a very short time only. I knew I was expected to be on my best behaviour as upsetting Matron was not an option!
Whilst sorting through my late parents belongings I came across a couple of postcards of Woodhurst which must have been bought when Nanny was convalescing there. This is what prompted me to share my memory.
