More about this scene

In the centre foreground of the picture stands St Peter's church, intact at this time, built out of locally quarried Triassic red sandstone and identified by its unusual helm-roof tower. Following a disastrous fire in 1950, only the tower and west window now survive. Also in the picture is the original railway station, the main building of which was replaced in the early years of the 20th century by one designed by Armitage Rigby.
