More about this scene
Those seeking refreshment in 1955 were certainly well catered for. Excluding the Esplanade Hotel, no fewer than five cafes operated along the front, including Forte's splendid ice cream parlour. A further two confectioners and a snack bar could be found on the pier. Accommodation was also plentiful. Although increasingly a magnet for day-trippers, by the end of the decade the town boasted two hotels, and four large and up to seventy-five smaller guesthouses.
