Penarth, The Pier c.1955

More about this scene
Just two years after the new pavilion's opening, a disaster was averted when bravery and decisive action prevented a blaze reaching it. During a dance on the August Bank Holiday of 1931 the old wooden Bijou Pavilion at the pier's seaward end was completely destroyed by fire. Boats were quickly mobilised to evacuate people from the damaged area, and we may be thankful that fatalities were avoided.
