More about this scene
Today, Penmaenmawr is a small, much-loved seaside resort overlooking Conwy Bay and backed by precipitous coastal mountains. However, in earlier times it was the terror of travellers on the Holyhead Road. This stretch of the coast road was merely a ledge cut along the crumbly cliffs, and was notorious for accidents. Penmaenmawr was originally a port for the shipment of local stone; it became the favourite holiday resort of W M Gladstone, who always spoke with affection of 'dear old Penmaenmawr'.
