More about this scene
Lying alongside the Roman fort 'Brocavum', the castle dates from the 12th century and was held by the Veteripont, and later the Clifford family. In 1420 it was laid waste by the Scots, and damaged in the Civil War. James I was entertained here lavishly in 1617 as the guest of Francis, Earl of Cumberland and his son Henry Clifford. In 1651 the castle was restored by the redoubtable, though charitable, Lady Anne Clifford who died there in 1676.
