More about this scene
Artists and writers have celebrated the castle ruins and their setting, notably J M W Turner and William Wordsworth. Turner's evocative and atmospheric study made in 1809 was used for his 'Rivers of England' series of 1825. Wordsworth recalled pleasant childhood hours spent exploring them, linking the building with the name of Sir Philip Sidney, an ancestral relative of the castle's restorer Lady Anne Clifford.
