Jones Family
A Memory of Pentwyn-mawr.
My great grandfather, Moses Jenkin Jones was born in Pentwynmawr 29/9/1863 - he was a miner. His father was James Jones (b.1836), mother Mary Jenkins (b.12/7/1837 d.1867) - they had 2 children. Moses came to Australia I think in 1883 by 'New Guinea' aged 21 and disembarked in Queensland, Australia either at Brisbane or Maryborough. He married Catherine Rosser (b.1866) Pentre, Glamorganshire. She came to Queensland I think in 1883. They had 3 children; Lillian Mary, Glynwr Rosser and Geoffrey Cynddylan (my grandfather), all born between 1889 and 1892. Sometime after 1892 Moses went to South Africa where he was murdered after discovering diamonds or gold. Catherine then married John Philip James and moved to the coal fields in the Hunter Valley near Newcastle, New South Wales and they had 3 children. I fleetingly visited Pentwynmawr when in Britain in 2007. I hope that someone reading this may be able to give me information on any members of the Jones family still in Wales. I have a lot information (BDM) on my Jones and Jenkins family in Australia and also Catherine Rosser/Jones/James but would love to know if any relatives are still in Wales and could tell me a bit about the family.
