North London Photo Book

A Memory of Perivale.

Having just purchased the Frances Frith Book "North London Photographic Memories" I was amazed too see on pages 30/31 a photo of Station Road Harrow on the Hill taken in 1914 the picture shows a "Home & Colonial" grocery store I started my first job at this store at Easter 1956 as a shop assistant looking at this photo very little had changed when I started there except the main shop window even the younger staff member has the same uniform I wore when I started, every thing looks the same except opposite the trees were gone & it their place was the "Harrow Colosseum" which had been closed for a number of years & was derelict, over the years with the company, I be came an trainee manager & was rostered around lots of the local H & C stores from the 2 in Watford the High street & the Junction, South Harrow, Wealdstone, Greenford Green, Kenton & others.
Also in the same book page 111 is a photo of Cup final day at Wembley Stadium in 1960 at the time I was working as a gardener-porter at a block of Flats called "Ragland Court" in Empire Way Wembley opposite the stadium & my job on days that the stadium was in use was stand by the second gate to our tenants car park & keep out people from parking thus keeping space for our tenants we had a chain from gate post to gate post I had open let the tenants in also I would let some of the people going to the stadium park against my bosses wishes at the charge of 5,pounds after half time I was finished but my boss would go round & let the non-tenants car tires down oh the fiddles I used to get up to ,to make a quid in then days by the end of 1960 I had left for Adelaide South Australia.
