We are in the Ouse valley just north of Newhaven. St John's church is on high ground overlooking the tidal river. It has a Norman flint-built round tower, and a shingled octagonal spire. It is one of the three Norman round towers of Sussex. The weather vane is a sea-trout not the 'begilded dolphin' mentioned in the poetry of Rudyard Kipling - 'Where Piddinghoe's begilded dolphin veers'. Pottery was a local industry; a conical kiln has been rebuilt and conserved. The sailing cruiser is moored in a mud berth, and local people look on curiously. The village was notorious for smuggling. The scene is more wooded now.
