More about this scene

Now a Grade 1 Listed Building, work was begun on this magnificent Catholic church, dedicated to St Mary and John the Baptist, in 1816. The money for its construction came from John Butler, the squire of Pleasington Hall, who was almost killed in an accident nearby. He made the gift as a thanksgiving to God that his life was spared.
