This view shows the commanding field of fire available to gunners on the Citadel, from where this picture was taken. Plymouth was staunchly parliamentarian during the Civil War; when Charles II built the Citadel, the fact that there were gun emplacements facing inland would not have gone unnoticed by the local population.
